Learn to paint with our artists

Fine Art Commissions is excited to announce a series of painting classes taking place this spring and summer at Picton Castle in Pembrokeshire, instructed by five of our experienced artists, focusing on still life, landscape and portrait painting.

Picton Castle is situated in a spectacular location close to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Whether you enjoy painting at home or have not picked up a paintbrush since school, the Art Courses are specially designed to give artists, of all abilities, the opportunity to paint together and share ideas in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

You will be able to work in a variety of studio spaces and also enjoy the use of the Lecture Theatre and Maria’s Courtyard restaurant. Discounted art supplies and framing and the use of easels are offered through the courses. There may also be the opportunity to exhibit at the Castle galleries.

Here are the exciting selection of painting courses we have available:

APRIL 24-25
Still Life and Spring Flowers at Picton Castle with Susie Philipps
We are offering a two day Masterclass with Susie, who will show you how to capture shape, colour and the flower in oil painting.

JULY 17-19
Landscapes with Minna Stevens
Minna, a tutor at Heatherley Art School in London, will guide you through the highs and lows of painting in watercolour. The three day course will focus on painting landscapes within the 45 acre garden at Picton and will give students the chance to paint the famous Picton Oak, saved by Prince Charles while he was a student in Pembrokeshire.

JULY 20-23
Emerging Artists with Rosalie Watkins
The four day course starts with short exercises in proportion, line and chiaroscuro. This is followed by cast drawing before progressing to painting in oil. You will also get the chance to work from the life model and the opportunity to experiment with alla prima painting.

JULY 24-27
Portrait Masterclass with Nick Bashall
Working exclusively from life, students will be introduced to the basic principles of rendering a portrait, including the importance of scale, structure and form.

SEPTEMBER 23-25
Sight-Size Masterclass with Nicky Philipps
Following on from the success of last year’s course, Nicky will be teaching the traditional sight-size technique used by the Old Masters that she learnt in Florence. In this class, you will go back to basics, drawing the plaster cast using the sight-size method.

Painting with the artist
We are also planning a series of ‘painting with the artist’ day classes where you will get the chance to paint with tutors including Nicky.
